THE HOTEL

The 4 Star Superior Hotel España is located in Calle Sant Pau, in the heart of Barcelona’s historic centre, next to La Rambla, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, La Boquería market, the shopping street Portal de l’Àngel, Plaza Cataluña, Paseo Colón, Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA), the Cathedral and the Gothic Quarter, and countless other places of interest that make Barcelona one of Europe’s most cosmopolitan cities.

The Hotel España originally opened its doors in 1859 under the name Fonda de España, and was later renovated by the celebrated modernist architect Lluis Domènech i Montaner in the early twentieth century with the collaboration of Eusebi Arnau and Ramón Casas. The work was deservedly recognised by Barcelona City Council when, in 1904, it awarded the hotel with its Diploma of Honour for “best establishment decorated in the artistic-ornamental style”, and has therefore always been considered a jewel in the crown of Catalonian modernism in the city of Barcelona.

Hotel España’s 2010 renovation project has recaptured the spirit that Domènech i Montaner conceived for the hotel. The hotel’s modernist spaces have been restored to their original design, while, at the same time, installing the latest in technology, design and comfort with the principal objective of offering an exceptional personalised service and establishing the Hotel España as a 4 Star Superior hotel of excellence in Barcelona’s Old Town.

The hotel offers 82 comfortable rooms that combine modern interior design with the classicism of a nineteenth century building. The hotel’s restaurant service is under the management of the award-winning chef Martín Berasategui at the restaurant Fonda España.
